Created in 2021, the Fred Goff Choral Scholars Program fosters the development of young vocal artists and shares with them the rich heritage of sacred music. The program is named in honor of Fred Goff, who served as Director of Music at St. James for 25 years and was a dedicated music educator. It is funded through St. James’ Outreach Fund.
The program provides 3-4 students the opportunity to sing with St. James’ Choir during the academic year (September – April), under the direction of Dr. Lee Steward. Goff Scholars receive training in choral performance and mentorship as emerging artists. They are exposed to a wide range of choral music, traditional and contemporary, and perform on Sunday mornings, major feast days, and occasional concerts.
Goff Scholars receive an annual scholarship of $2,000, disbursed in monthly installments of $250 during the academic year. This scholarship is renewable and is intended to support current and future educational expenses, as well as training opportunities in the musical arts. Recipients must be registered students at a San Francisco Bay Area high school, college or conservatory. We seek outstanding student voices with reliable musicianship and personal skills.
St. James is a progressive Episcopal congregation established in 1890. We value Christian formation, intergenerational community, and community service with respect for the rich heritage of the world’s spiritual traditions. We welcome qualified applicants to the Goff Choral Scholars Program, regardless of religious background. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all members of our parish community.
